Number the Stars Activities/Project
Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry, won the Newbery Award in 1990. This moving, well-written book, helps students to see the effects of courage and caring. The factually-based story is set in Denmark during World War II and tells that country's efforts to save their Jewish citizens. Two young girls are the focus - each having poignant tales to tell.
Students may choose one activity from the following to complete their project for our novel.
1. Imagine yourself living in an occupied country, such as Denmark was during the World War II. What would you feel? What would you do? Present a dramatic monologue (a detailed talk or a speech given by one person). A typed or written copy of the dialogue must be submitted for grading.
2. As a modern Hans Christian Anderson, compose a fairy tale for Kirsti that features kings, queens, cupcakes with pink frosting, and new shoes. Make a picture book for the little girl.
3. Put together a travel brochure illustrating information about Denmark: its people, places, culture, and history. Make sure to research what a travel brochure looks like. Your finished product should be detailed and appealing.
4. Conclude whether or not the adults in Annemaries's life are correct in withholding information from her or in telling her half-truths. Express your decision and reasoning in an article as if written for a magazine.
5. The courage of the Danish people - from King Christian to children like Annemarie - is a theme of Number the Stars. Compose an ode (a poem) in honor of the character in the story who, in your judgment, is the most courageous of all.
6. Produce and video tape a silent movie dramatizing Annemarie's journey "On the Dark Path."
